Scene Analysis What Happens in your scene? Outline the basic events.
In a dark cavern, Macbeth enters and asks the witches to reveal the truth of their prophecies to him. To answer his questions, they summon horrible apparitions, each of which offers a prediction to allay Macbeth’s fears. They tell Macbeth to beware Macduff. Next, a crowned child holding a tree tells him that he is safe until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. Finally, a procession of eight crowned kings walks by, the last carrying a mirror. Banquo’s ghost walks at the end of the line. Macbeth demands to know the meaning of this final vision, but the witches perform a mad dance and then vanish. Lennox enters and tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England. Macbeth resolves to send murderers to capture Macduff’s castle and to kill Macduff’s wife and children.
What do you think are the key purposes of your scene? In other words, why is this scene important? The key purpose of this scene is to show how this new and corrupted Macbeth reacts to such a situation. Macbeth goes to the witches in seek of answers to these future tellings. As soon as the apparations whom are summoned by the witches, tell Macbeth that Macduff would become a problem in the future, Macbeth instantly sets his mind on killing not only Macduff, but Macduff's entire family as well. Ultimately, this scene's purpose was to express Macbeth's new evil state of mind and paranoia to maintain his position of power.
What are your reactions to this scene?
I wasn’t surprised at Macbeth’s reaction to the three witches and the apparitions. It was almost lucid that Macbeth would react as he did after how corrupted he had been behaving to his kingdom as well as to his peers. Throughout the novel, one could easily see the transformation of Macbeth from his innocent and brave state of mind to his evil perspective. At this moment, he was nearly at his peak of paranoia. His thoughts had become more evil thus it became easier to tell that he would react rationally to such a situation where someone becomes an obstacle such as Macduff in Macbeth's drive and maintenance for power.
Character Report My character that I will be playing is the second and third witch. Not only do my characters as the witches aspire to deceive Macbeth as an individual, but it also seems to be their motive to create trouble as it is their supposed job as they constantly repeat “Double Double Toil and Trouble” in this scene. Concerning the success of the witches, it seems that they do not have problems creating trouble amongst Macbeth and the people of his kingdom. They do not have much problem in dealing with gullible Macbeth as he does believe in almost everything that they say. Macbeth obviously will do anything to maintain and keep his power. Witches one and three additionally also have distinctive elements in my character’s way of speaking. Not only in this scene, but throughout the entire play, the witches constantly speak in rhymes in almost every line in the stanza. Not only do they talk in rhyming phrases, but they talk very literally in their details. My characters, as both are witches, have almost identical thoughts. The witches are most likely thinking about the outcome and the deception of Macbeth as he foolishly falls into their trap of trickery.
